Letheringsett Maltings
Letheringsett, Norfolk, UK
Overview
After a protracted process to obtain planning and listed building consent permission, the former malting barn, barrel store and stables in Letheringsett were redesigned to create 8no. 2 -3 bedroom spacious dwellings. Part of the planning process involved Tom producing watercolored images to help communicate the proposed designs to the residents of Letheringsett. The design had to consider the complexities of flooding concerns, owing to the properties immediate location next to the river Glandford, contamination, highways and archaeology which all had a part to play in shaping and finalising the design. Perhaps the most restrictive concern was the potential disturbance of protected species of bat and barn owls. Due to this, the end of the maltings, with the former roasting chamber has been retained for use of wildlife. Conservation officers also placed restrictions on no new windows, Tom’s innovative designed involved a long, thin, patent glazing to the roof in the least visible, north side of the building, providing high levels of natural light into each dwelling.
